Who counts as a bedridden patient

It means the patient cannot reach an ordinary car on their own, not even with help from the family. It can be permanent or only temporary, after an operation. The practical consequence is the same: the journey needs a stretcher or a chair, two people to lift, and a vehicle in which the patient can lie down.

How the journey works, step by step

• You call 0735 347 600 and give the pick-up address, the destination, the floor, whether there is a lift and the patient's condition.
• The dispatcher confirms the final price and the time the crew arrives.
• The crew goes up with the stretcher or the chair that fits the access.
• The patient is moved from the bed, secured on the stretcher and brought down safely.
• Blood pressure, pulse and oxygen saturation can be monitored on the way if the patient's condition calls for it.
• Hand-over happens at the bed, at the ward, or to the person waiting at home.

No lift, narrow stairs, tight doorways

Tell us the floor and whether the building has a lift. A lift in an older block does not always take a stretcher, in which case the patient comes down on a transport chair or a scoop stretcher. This is the single detail that most often changes the equipment we send, so it is worth giving on the first call.

Also useful on that first call: the width of the room door, a tight landing, and, for houses, whether the vehicle can reach the front door.

What transport for a bedridden patient costs
